10/23/02 Spring Lake Meet

Montgomery shines

In big meets, the best rise to the top, and that was very
true for this meet.

Robinson
"I put it into another gear."

Fitch
"I give all the glory to God"

GIRLS

Three of the top teams in the state raced together
at the 2.97 mile Spring Lake course with record setting
results.
   The start was rather conservative.
"I didn't want to go out ahead of Amy." said Montgomery's
Kim Handel.
First mile saw Maria Carrillo's Amy Robinson leading with
Handel and teammate Kim Conley right behind.
First mile for the Vikings was 5:55.
"Just what we wanted." said Conley.
By two miles, the three where flying with Handel moving
right onto Robinson's back.
"I probably should have made a move on her then." said
Handel, "but I wanted to wait until the end and she got away
from me."
"I could hear her behind me." said Robinson, "I just told
myself I had to keep going."
"During the last mile I told myself I can go faster." said
Robinson, "I put it into another gear."
That gear put her in rare territory as she, for the second
week in a row, lowered her PR to 17:39.
That dropped her below Montgomery great Sarah Bashel (17:40)
to 6th on the all-time list. It was also only 33 seconds behind
the Carrillo record of 17:06 by Jenny Aldridge in 2001.
It also moved her ahead of Bashel and Santa Rosa State
Champion Trina Cox on the all-time sophomore list. Only
National Champions Julia Stamps and Sara Bei are ahead of her
on that list.
Robinson's teammates all improved on their times from last
week (96:43 to 95:27) but the Vikings ran one of the great
team races all-time on this course with a 92:41 total time to
easily win the team battle with a score of 23 to 36 for Carrillo
and 68 for Ursuline.
Only last year's Carrillo team (92:23) and a Stamps lead 1996
Santa Rosa team (92:29) have ever gone faster. Last year's
Viking team ran (93:32) and the 2000 State Champion team ran (93:55).
   Handel (17:47) and Conley 17:59) became only the 8th & 9th
runners to ever crack the 18:00 barrier.
Handel's time moved her to 6th among Seniors all-time.
Conley's time moved her to 6th among Juniors all-time.
Six girls broke 19 with 11 under 20.

BOYS

The boys were not about to let the girls get all the glory.
A great battle was quickly established in the boys race as
Newman's J.K. Withers lead Montgomery's Matt Fitch and K.C.
Cody through the first mile.
Viking coach Josh Dorris gave instructions to his charges
to get moving shortly after this and the three blazed the
rest of the course.
Fitch pulled away to a HUGE PR at 15:27.
That moved him all the way to 6th all-time on the course and
only one second off the Viking school record of David Toomey
from 1993.
"The last mile and the last hill I pushed it hard." said Fitch,
"It was a tough race, God came through for me."
The trio all moved onto the all-time Junior list with Fitch
breaking the 1989 record of Santa Rosa's Steve Guerrini (15:28).
State Champion Ryan Mack of Ukiah did 15:31 as a Junior in 1997.
Withers time of 15:43 moved him to =8th on the Junior list tying
him with the other future State Champion Celedonio Rodriguez of
Elsie Allen.
Cody grabbed the #11 spot on the Junior list at 15:50.
Withers time moved him ten seconds ahead of Newman's all-time
best by Brent Shaw back in 1998.
Viking Regan Masi gave the Vikes three of the top four.
The Viking team ran a super time as well, finishing in a
combined 81:22 to move to 6th on the all-time list.
Only a Masi lead 2000 team with Fitch's older brothers Zac
and Jon on the team have run faster since 1998.
