From Steve Laurie

Editors Note:
Steve Laurie was one of the all-time best distance runners on
the high school level from this area. Steve, Ryan Mack (Ukiah) and
Cele Rodriguez (Elsie Allen) all broke the Spring Lake course record their senior
year in one incredible race. Their times are still the top 3 with Mack prevailing.

Jim -
I can't believe the last four years have gone by so quickly, but here I am, a 5th year senior,
with only track eligibility remaining. I am in kind of a weird situation where I can't run cross country
with the UC Davis team because I've already used my four seasons, but am training to compete in
the track season come winter and spring. My roommate and I just returned from training in Colorado
Springs for the whole summer where I gained a new appreciation for the difficulty one faces training
day in and day out above 6500 ft. We traveled around a bit and were able to stay for about a week
with Cele Rodriguez since he is going to school at Adams State in Alamosa, CO.
Also, we ventured to the top of the world, climbing two 14,000+ ft peaks while in Colorado.
Currently, I'm planning on running a very limited cross country season, maybe only 3 races or so,
and to just train through November without having to worry about being race-sharp. I will be running
an indoor race probably in Seattle in February, but the real focus is on the outdoor season starting
in the end of March. My primary focus will be to find two fast 10K races around the country, and
then fill in the rest of the schedule with 5Ks. The move by UC Davis to Division I is posing a dillema
in that we are ineligible to compete in any conference, regional, or national championship meet.
My last four seasons have all focused on trying to perform well at these meets, but the coaches
promise us they will find something to replace this large piece of our season. Overall, I'm healthy,
fit, and thus far have enjoyed my career at Davis immensly.
After drawing out my classes this year in order to still be eligible in the spring, I will be graduating
with a degree in Exercise Physiology. I am currently researching which universities offer Masters
programs in this same area of study and will hopefully be continuing on with school next year on
track for a masters degree. I am planning to continue running after I finish up at Davis and,
depending on where I end up, would like to join a club team in the area, but that's still a year a way.
Best in running,
Steve Laurie
