Wiley in the hunt for a State medal

NORWALK -- It wasn't a particularly good day for Redwood Empire athletes at
the high school state track meet at Cerritos College on Friday, but Sonoma
freshman high jumper, Mindi Wiley, is still very much alive in the finals of her event.
Wiley finished fourth in the girls high jump trials, equaling the day's
best of 5-foot, 6 inches. Others going 5-6, but finishing ahead of Wiley on
fewer misses were Sharon Day of Costa Mesa, Kisha Fontenot of Woodland and
LaShay Bagsby of South Bakersfield.
Wiley is trying to become the first-ever Empire girl athlete to win a field event at state.
Ten of 12 Empire athletes at state competed in the trials Friday afternoon
and evening and only Wiley advanced.

Montgomery senior Regan Masi in the boys 800 came the closest to moving on,
along with Wiley, and finished third in his heat in 1:55.08, but was only
10th overall. The top nine times earned runners a chance to run in Saturday's 800 final.

Montgomery pole vaulting twins Matt and Mike Tillinghast failed to qualify
for the finals. Both cleared 14-4 to finish tied for 13th spot.
Casa Grande's Mike Sullivan failed to clear 14-4.

Rancho Cotate's Melissa Adams pole vaulted 11-0 and finished 13th in the girls competition.

Sonoma's Melissa Van Paris, a NCS champ in the shot put, wound up 14th with
a throw of 40-6 and didn't advance to the finals. The nine qualifiers all
threw better than 42-7.

Montgomery's Kim Conley didn't qualify in the girls 1600, but did lead in
the race from the end of the second lap until almost the end of the third
lap. She wound up seventh in her heat and 13th overall in a time of 5:05.91.

Montgomery's Carina Hendricks was sixth in her heat and 19th overall in 2:19.21.

JK Withers of Cardinal Newman finished ninth in his heat of the boys 1600
and 19th overall in 4:22.82.

Two Empire runners in the girls 3200 didn't have to run a preliminary.
Rancho Cotate's Phyliss Blanchard and Ukiah's Shelby Leland will run today.
