PUMAS PRIMED FOR STATE

The Maria Carrillo girls cross country team is ranked first in the state in DivisionIII, but coach
Danny Aldridge is reserving judgment on just exactly which teams the Pumas may have to beat out for a
state title.
It was last year about this time that Aldridge was informed his teams would compete in Div.II, not
Div.III at the North Coast Section and state meets.
The division a school competes in is determined by a school's enrollment in grades 10-12 and often,
because of transfers, a school's enrollment will grow or shrink from summer to fall.
The magic number is 1,151. If Mario Carrillo goes over that enrollment figure, the cross country
teams are bumped up to Div.II. If not, the Pumas stay Div.III.
Aldridge admits there isn't much difference in divisions. The Maria Carrillo girls will stay ranked
No.1 in state at Div.II. But it could make a difference at the NCS meet, where the field may be tougher
in Div.III, where Miramonte is ranked third in state and Campolindo fourth.
Getting pushed into another division means at the state meet one could be running against teams you
haven't seen all season and runners you're unfamiliar with. And Div.II might be easier at NCS, but
tougher at state.
   * The Puma girls and boys won an informal Ekiden Relays at Rocklin on Saturday.
The cross country race was broken down into a 2,000, two 1,500s, another 2,000 and a 3,000 with each
of five runners handling a leg.
The Puma girls won by 2:30 over Live Oak, and the boys edged Live Oak by a second as the Pumas'
Michael Brew won the last relay.
   * The NBL cross country meet is Nov.12 at Spring Lake, the NCS meet is Nov.20 at Hayward and the
state meet is Nov.27 at Woodward Park in Fresno.
