Coastal Mountain Conference Preview by Harry Skandera

  The CMC Boys' Race looks like it will be a 4-way battle with Santa Rosa Christian,
Rincon Valley Christian, Willits, and Ft. Bragg battling it out for honors. Santa Rosa
Christian has posted the best team times at the Viking Opener and recently defeated
each of the other contenders in a preseason meet(CMC West Preseason Championship) in
Willits. Neither Rincon or Santa Rosa have won a conference championship while
defending champion Ft. Bragg and Willits have won the lions' share of the titles for
the past 20 years. St. Vincent and Lower Lake have the talent to upset any of the
contenders on the right day. Perez of Lower Lake and Jackson of SRC are the early
favorites for individual honors. Perez won the Junior Race at the Viking Opener,
the Lake County Championships and recently dominated in dual meet action on his
home course. Jackson is a state meet qualifier in his junior year, won the CMC
West Championship and also dominated in his season dual meet opener. Top Runners at
this point of the season:
    Perez-Lower Lake; Jackson - SRC; Broyles - Kelseyville; Smith; Cloverdale;
Carey - Willits;Atkinson- St. Vincent's; Huckaby-RVC.

    In the Girls' competition, defending champ Willits lost their 2nd and 3rd runners
from last year, but is led by individual contender Cheyenne Waldmann. At the CMC
preseason the Wildcats were upset by a talented bunch from St. Vincent and were only
slightly ahead of Cloverdale and Santa Rosa Christian. Santa Rosa is coming off of a
narrow victory over Lake County Champion Middletown, who is led by Julia Malvino, a
definite contender for individual conference honors. At this point St. Vincent looks
to be a slight favorite for the Conference Meet, but Willits has a clear advantage in
dual meet competition based upon the strength of their first three runners. Top
Runners at this point of the season:  Waldmann - Willits; Malvino - Middletown;
Davis - Willits; Aquilina- SRC; Hughes - Willits; Vegher - St. Vincent; Schulding - Middletown.
