BEI 10TH AT NATIONALS Former Montgomery High standout Sara Bei couldn't stay with the leaders in the 3000 meters at the NCAA Division I Indoor track and field championships at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark. Despite missing most of the indoor season recovering from a stress fracture in her lower back, Bei qualified with the third best time. Renee Metivier of Colorado won the race in 9:22.81. Bei, who will compete in the outdoor track season for Stanford, ran a 9:29.88, finishing, behind teammates Kathleen Trotter (9:26) and Anita Siraki (9:29.84). Stanford's distance medley team, anchored by Bei, finished third. * Former Elsie Allen High student Celedonio Rodriguez (Adams State) finished sixth in the Division II 6,000 meter race in 14:21.26. Nicodemus Naimado of Abilene Christian won the race in 13:59. More on Sara's race from her dad We just returned from the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Just to clarify regarding how Sara did in the race, she actually ran an excellent race. She was exactly where she wanted to be with 300m left in the race, just off the shoulder of the leader. Sara passed the leader on the back straightaway to take over first place and began her kick to the finish. Unfortunately, in moving from lane two into lane one after passing the leader, Sara clipped the stride of the other runner (Cack Farrell of Princeton) and Sara fell face first on the track. The majority of the field passed her and she got up to finish the race. We were very proud of her finishing the race and how she handled herself after the race. She ran an excellent race, exactly according to plan except for the unexpected fall. We can only imagine how the final 300m would have gone. Sara is a bit scraped up, but fine. The distance medley also went well. The team performed well and Sara was battling for the lead down the home stretch when an excellent miler from Michigan shot past right at the finish line. The gap in time from 1-3 was less than a second. It was a very close finish. Sara is very pleased with her progress and looking forward to outdoor track. Gary Bei
