SCHOOL-RECORD RUN WAS TOTAL SURPRISE

COLUMN: ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Healdsburg senior Tim Quiroga wasn't feeling all that great a week ago at the Oakland Relays.
He was feeling a lot better afterward, winning the 1,600 in a school-record and personal-best 4:21.44.
``I just wanted to tuck in with the pack and hoped I had enough left at the end to maybe pull away,'' said Quiroga,
who has also competed for Ukiah in his high school cross country and track career. ``I was sort of feeling sick that day.''
Asked if the win was a surprise, he said: ``Totally.''
``He has an excellent attitude and work ethic,'' said Healdsburg track coach Jenean Bingham.
Quiroga said his goal is to qualify for the state meet. If he doesn't do it in the 1,600, there's a chance he might
in the 4x400 relay. That Greyhound relay team of Ryan Costa, Quiroga, Will Crockenberg and Tim Murphy was second at the
Oakland Relays, as they broke their own school record with a time of 3:25.07. Three of the four, including Quiroga,
have run legs under 51 seconds.
Quiroga won the 1,600, was second in the 800 to Murphy and ran on the winning 4x400 relay last week against Windsor.
``He's a smart runner,'' Bingham said of Quiroga. ``He just stays with the lead pack and then tries to make a move on
the last lap.''
Quiroga started running in the seventh grade. His dad, Carlos, who assists Bingham and works with the distance runners,
held the school record in the 800 until Murphy erased it this season. Tim broke Hector Delgado's 1994 mile record.
Quiroga said he was a little disappointed in his finishes in cross country this season, but so far the track season has
been good. Last year Quiroga made it to the second day of the mile at the NCS Meet of Champions, the state qualifier.
``He's right on track where I want him to be,'' said Bingham, who said she's aiming for the track team to peak for the
postseason.
Quiroga, 18, said he'll likely attend Santa Rosa JC and then possibly transfer to U.C. Davis.
