Redwood Empire distance running standout Sara Bei and her husband of less than one month, Ryan Hall,
have joined the most accomplished distance running group in the country.
The 22-year-old runners have signed up with Team Running USA, the training group based in Mammoth
Lakes (for high altitude) and San Diego (sea level). The established stars on Team Running USA include
2004 Olympic Marathon medalists Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor and two-time Olympian Jen Rhines along
with five-time national champion Ryan Shay.
Bei, who starred at Montgomery High School before becoming a seven-time All-American in track and
cross country at Stanford, is coming off back-to-back runner-up performances in the 5,000 meters at the
NCAA track championships.
Hall is the 2005 NCAA 5,000 champion and a six-time All-American at Stanford.
Gabe Jennings, 26, of Mendocino, the 2000 Olympian at 1,500 meters and NCAA 1,500 outdoor and mile
indoor champion, has also joined the team.
Five other top-flight former collegians, including Stanford's Alicia Craig and Lauren Fleshman, join
Bei on the well-heeled team that has produced two Olympic medals, one world record, 11 national records
and 12 world cross country champions since 2001.
Olympic coaches Joe Vigil and Bob Larsen and new coach Terrence Mahon coordinate the elite group.
