MIKE PEREZ: LOWER LAKE, SENIOR, CROSS COUNTRY

DATE: Tuesday, October 4, 2005
SECTION: SPORTS
COLUMN: ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Mike Perez is expanding his reputation as one of the Empire's top runners.
Last week he won by nearly a minute on his home course -- Anderson Marsh -- and opened the season
with a boys' victory at Spring Lake in the Viking Invitational, made up mostly of large-school competitors.
Perez finished 11th in the Div.IV race in the North Coast Section last year and was 52nd at state.
He's hoping to better both of those finishes.
``He loves the heat and he just keeps running,'' said his coach, Laura Hutchinson.
Perez said he prefers cross country to track -- he was the CMC 800 and mile champ last year -- because
of the variety of courses and venues.
``I want to advance past state,'' said Perez, referring to a regional race for top state qualifiers.

INFOBOX: Perez's worst finish this season is a second at Marysville. He won the Viking Invite at
Spring Lake and last week won a CMC race by nearly a minute.
