Lower Lake's Perez wins mile in 4:13.3
By THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Lower Lake miler Mike Perez is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable
runners in California high school track.
Perez, a senior, came from behind to win the mile in a hand-held 4:13.3 at
the St. Francis Track and Field Carnival Saturday at Mountain View, and his
converted 1600 time of 4:11.97 ranks as the second fastest time in the Redwood
Empire.

"I think some people might have thought it was a flash in the pan,"
said Lower Lake track coach Bob Galloway, referring to Perez's winning 1600
time of 4:16.8 last week at Piedmont.
Perez grabbed back the honor of running the fastest 1600 in the state this
season, three days after Michael Coe of Cabrillo ran a 4:15.8.
Ben Sitler of Saint Francis, one of the top cross country runners in the state,
led for most of Saturday's race and at one time held a 13-yard lead over Perez.
But Perez caught Sitler on the final turn and pulled away to win easily in
gusty conditions. Sitler's mile time was 4:19. St. Helena's Brian Cole was
third in 4:28.9.

The Empire's top 1600 time belongs to Cardinal Newman's
J.K. Withers (4:10.84), which he ran in 2004.
Those Perez passed on the all-time list were
4:13.66* Dave Royal Petaluma 1979
4:13.67 Jordan Kinley Maria Carrillo 2002
4:13.81 Ryan Mack Ukiah 1998
4:13.85 Steve Guerrini Santa Rosa 1991
4:15.35*	Dan Aldridge Petaluma 1975
4:16.03 Tom Macken Santa Rosa 1986
4:16.04+ Dawit Tesfasilassie Piner 2004
4:16.75* Jon Sisler Petaluma 1974

Because of wet and muddy conditions on the Lower Lake track, Perez has run the mile
just twice in competition this season.
