5 SANTA ROSA ALL-CITY MEET RECORDS ESTABLISHED
WINNERS INCLUDE SR'S HOWARD, MC'S LOWDER, LIGHTFOOT, EA'S JACKSON

Suzanne Howard was the clear-cut favorite to capture the girls' 100-meter hurdles Wednesday at the
23rd Santa Rosa All-City track meet hosted by Santa Rosa High at Ernie Nevers Field. Then a near
disaster occurred.
The Santa Rosa sprinter rolled her ankle just moments before entering the starting blocks. As it
turned out, it was a minor injury, and it certainly didn't seem to bother her. She bolted from the
blocks and ran the best race of her young career, winning in 15.0 to set a meet record, eclipsing the
old mark of 15.7 set in 1994 by Montgomery's Patty Teal.
``I was crying. A teammate helped calm me down,'' said Howard, who made it to the 100 hurdle finals
last year at the Meet of Champions as a freshman. ``I knew this was a big meet. This was the first time
I've really sprinted all the way through the race.''
Santa Rosa coach Doug Courtemarche credits a technique change for Howard's improvement. Courtemarche
said Howard went from taking four steps between hurdles to three steps.
``Now she is sprinting through the hurdles,'' he said. ``Once you get under 15.0, you are in an
elite class. I think she's the best hurdler we've had at Santa Rosa since Katie Schukle in 1995-97.
Katie was fourth at state in '96 in the 300 hurdles.''
A combination of warm weather and a slight tail wind in the stretch helped produce five All-City
meet records.
Maria Carrillo's Jenna Lowder, arguably the best sprinter in the Empire, set two meet records. In
the 100 she ran 11.9 to break the record of 12.2 she shared with Santa Rosa's Kim Linden. Then she
came back to run 24.8 in the 200, breaking her own record of 25.0 set last year. Lowder also shares
the 400 meet record, but chose not to run in that event.
Josh Jackson, Elsie Allen's top sprinter, captured the boys' 200 and 400 sprints. He was named the
boy athlete of the meet.
Carrillo's Jean Lightfoot set two meet records, shattering the girls' discus record with a toss of
129-feet, 10 inches. Her throw of 40-9 in the shot was also a record.
Lowder, Lightfoot and Howard were named the girls' athletes of the meet.
Carrillo ended Santa Rosa's three-year winning streak in the boy's competition, besting the Panthers,
179-117. Elsie Allen (66) was third.
Carrillo, the defending girls' champs, ran up 179.5 points to post an easy win. Montgomery (122)
was second with Santa Rosa (92.5) a distant third.
