ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

DANIEL ERDMAN: HEALDSBURG, JUNIOR, TRACK

Daniel Erdman is a quiet, unassuming athlete. But when his shot put coach told him to give
a good scream when he threw, Erdman did just that and wound up with a personal best 52 feet,
8 inches last week against El Molino.
``He's very shy, but a pleasure to work with,'' said Greyhounds shot put coach Ed Voelkel.
``I told him to scream and let the energy out.''
``When you throw the shot well, it feels effortless,'' said Erdman, 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds.
Sometimes Erdman, 16, doesn't seem to know his own strength. When throwing a rubber-coated shot
indoors at Healdsburg, he put a dent in the wall with a long toss across the gym.
``He's super strong and has lots of determination,'' Voelkel said.
Erdman also runs the 100 (his best is 11.6) and the second leg of the 4x100 relay. He was a
standout lineman on the 'Hounds SCL championship football team.

Daniel Erdman bettered his mark in the shot put by more than three feet with a throw of 52-8
last week. He's one of the Empire's top weightmen and exhibits good lower-body power and strength.
He hopes to qualify for state.
