PINER TO HONOR EX-TRACK COACH UNDERHILL

Piner High School will name its football and track stadium in honor of longtime teacher and coach
Jim Underhill at a halftime dedication Sept. 16.
Underhill was a fixture at Piner from its opening in 1966 until his retirement in 1994. Underhill,
a Santa Rosa High grad, was head track and cross country coach at Piner for nearly 30 years. His teams
won 20 league championships; in both track and cross country, his teams put together nine consecutive
seasons of being undefeated in dual meets.
His 1976 cross country team was ranked first in the state and third nationally.
Underhill was chosen a CIF North Coast Section Track Honors coach in 1977, NCS Cross Country coach in
1982 and was inducted into Piner's first Hall of Fame class earlier this year.
Underhill was also named Santa Rosa City Schools Secondary Teacher of the Year in 1987.
On Sept. 16, there will be a reception at 11 a.m. for Underhill at Piner. The dedication of the field
in his name will follow the JV football game at approximately 12:15 p.m.
There will be a plaque placed at the stadium in Underhill's honor.
