DATE: Tuesday, October 24, 2006 COLUMN: ATHLETE OF THE WEEK BRIAN COLE: ST. HELENA, SENIOR, CROSS COUNTRY Nearly every cross country course Brian Cole runs these days, he sets a record. Just last week, Cole, who has twice reached the state meet, set a new mark at Helen Putnam Park in Petaluma of 15:06 over 2.9 miles. And the holder of the old record of 15:42? It was Cole. ``He's stronger this year and mentally he's into every race,'' said coach Janet Todd. In a race at Spring Lake, Cole ran 15:28 (3.05 miles), the seventh-fastest all-time and tops for a Coastal Mountain Conference runner, besting a mark by standout Mike Perez from last season. ``I think I've improved and it might be because of a backpacking trip I took,'' Cole said. Cole hiked 170 miles to the top of Mount Whitney last summer. ``I know I feel stronger,'' Cole said. Cole also came off a good track season as a miler. He believes he has a chance to win the boys' Division V state meet race in a few weeks. Cole has a 4.1 GPA and is considering universities such as Oregon, Princeton, Brown and Williams. Brian Cole is considered the top male runner in the Coastal Mountain Conference and is expected to be among the favorites in the Division V race at North Coast Section and the state meet.
