BLAKE MCDOWALL: MONTGOMERY, SENIOR, CROSS COUNTRY

DATE: Tuesday, September 19, 2006
COLUMN: ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Blake McDowall

Bothered by illness and injury for much of his running career, Blake McDowall is healthy and showing
he's one of the top runners in the Empire.
McDowall won the Viking Opener at Spring Lake in 10:08, the 12th-fastest all-time mark on the course,
eighth-fastest for seniors and the fastest all-time for a Montgomery boy.
The previous week, McDowall won the Ed Siaz meet. A key race for him will be Stanford in a couple of
weeks.
``It's the best I've ever felt,'' said McDowall, who had hip problems early on and last year had
mononucleosis.
``He is goal-driven and very competitive,'' said Montgomery coach Val Sell. ``He has lots of potential.
He's also team-oriented and conscientious.''
Determined to get in good physical shape, McDowall ran 60-70 miles a week at Annadel this summer.

INFOBOX: Blake McDowall won Montgomery's Viking Opener junior/senior boys' race last weekend, covering the
2-mile Spring Lake course in 10:08, best time ever for a Montgomery boy.
