   RUNNING TOGETHER
Apparently, there is something to be said about having a number of strong runners in the same cross
country race, working together, pushing one another to produce fast times.
Take the case of Montgomery senior Blake McDowall, who ran away with last week's North Bay League
championship race at Spring Lake.
McDowall ran the 3.05-mile course in 15 minutes, 9 seconds, the fourth-fastest boys' time at Spring
Lake. McDowall did it all on his own, basically running against the clock.
And the top three Spring Lake times? Remarkably they all came in the same 1998 NBL race. Ukiah's Ryan
Mack won the race in 14:50, Maria Carrillo's Steve Laurie was second in 15:01 and Elsie Allen's Celedonio
Rodriguez was third in 15:05.

TAYLOR JOINS SELECT GROUP OF RUNNERS

Casa Grande freshman runner Jacque Taylor put herself in select company with her Sonoma County League
championship cross country race victory last week at Spring Lake.
Taylor's winning time of 17 minutes, 19 seconds was the sixth fastest for a girl at Spring Lake.
The five runners ahead of Taylor reads like a Who's Who of Empire and national-caliber cross country
competitors.
   * Julia Stamps, now running marathons after one of the most impressive high school careers at Santa
Rosa, clocked a 16:15 at Spring Lake in 1995.
   * Amber Trotter, a state champ and a Footlocker national champ from Ukiah, ran a 16:31 in 2001.
   * Sara Bei, currently a national-caliber middle distance runner, the four-time state cross country
champ from Montgomery, ran a 16:43 in 1998.
   * Trina Cox, a state champ from Santa Rosa, who last year won an NCAA Div. II steeplechase title at
Abilene Christian, ran a 17:04 in 1998.
   * Jenny Aldridge, a state champ in the 1,600, now assisting her dad, Dan, with Maria Carrillo, ran a
17:06 in 2001 as a Puma.
Taylor next runs on Saturday in the NCS meet at Hayward High in the Division II race.
