COLUMN: ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

JACQUE TAYLOR: CASA GRANDE, FRESHMAN, CROSS COUNTRY

Taylor's dad, Jim, says the first nine letters of the family's e-mail address -- jushavfun --
neatly sums up one of his family's philosophies.
With that in mind, it's no wonder that Jacque, 14, says she hasn't felt pressure this season
despite being compared to Redwood Empire running legends Julia Stamps and Sara Bei.
``There's really no pressure because I run for fun,'' Taylor said. ``It's always enjoyable.''
The fun continued for Taylor last week. She won a three-mile, dual-meet race against Windsor in
18 minutes, 56 seconds at Martinelli Ranch, lowering the course record by 40 seconds.
Her latest win came on the heels of an impressive performance at the ultra-competitive Mount SAC
Invitational on Oct. 21. Taylor's time of 17:37 was the 10th-fastest time ever run by a freshman on
the three-mile course.
Said Casa Grande coach Carl Triola, ``She's shown she can handle the big stage.''

Second in 18:00 in the Division II race this season at the prestigious Stanford Invite. She posted
the best overall freshman time, 19 seconds faster than Alycia Cridebring of College Park.
