Maria Carrillo girls, SR boys win team titles in qualifier
Top seven finishers in each event headed to NCS Meet of Champions next Saturday

The Maria Carrillo girls track team won its eighth Redwood Empire championship in 
nine years at Saturday's Meet of Champions qualifier at Del Norte High in Crescent City.

The Santa Rosa boys, led by a strong group of sprinters, also won a team championship.

Panthers senior Maurice Whitlock won both the 100 (10.93) and 200 meters (22.59) 
and ran anchor on the winning 4x100 relay team that set a meet record of 43.04. 
Also running on the relay were David Dinh, Therman McGowan and Robbie Marsh.

The top seven finishers in each of Saturday's events qualified for next Saturday's 
North Coast Section MOC at Cal's Edwards Stadium.

Healdsburg's Daniel Erdman, who will be among the favorites next weekend, won both 
the shot put and discus.

His discus throw of 156 feet, 4 inches was a personal best; his winning shot throw 
was 56-9¼.

Santa Rosa pole vaulter David Kimari won his event with a personal best of 13-6.

Maria Carrillo's Calvin Thigpen won the 3,200 in 9:25.44, Casa Grande's James Grant won 
the 300 hurdles in 40.79, Sonoma's Brian Martinelli won the high jump at 6-4 and Piner's 
Phanat Amphai won the long jump at 21-3¼.

One of the best races of the day was the girls 1,600, with four Empire competitors 
sweeping the top four spots.

Casa Grande's Jacque Taylor led for the first three laps, but with 300 yards to go 
Maria Carrillo's Kristen Sanzari moved ahead and won in 5:00.60. Taylor was second 
in 5:02.73, Carrillo's Leanne Fogg was third in 5:03.69 and El Molino's Brittny 
Escamilla was fourth in 5:04.45.

Taylor won the 3,200 in 10:59.40, with Fogg second in 11:03.17.

Sanzari was also second in the 800 in 2:18.33.

Santa Rosa's Suzanne Howard was a double winner, capturing both the 100 (15.27) and 
300 (46.78) hurdles.

Montgomery's Corrine Rich won both the shot put (38-6) and discus (118-4).

Carrillo's Jenna Lundgren won the 400 in 59.70.

The Maria Carrillo girls also won the 4x400 in 4:06.99 with a team of Lauren and 
Cara Curtin, Lundgren and Sanzari.

CLASS A MEET

Fort Bragg boys dominated the team scoring with Santa Rosa Christian in third.

St. Helena senior Brian Cole won the boys 1,600, and St. Vincent's Jake Doolittle won 
both the shot and discus to highlight the Class A championships at Diablo Valley 
College in Pleasant Hill.

The top three finishers in each event advanced to next weekend's Meet of Champions 
at Berkeley.

Cole won the 1,600 in 4.27.40, with Santa Rosa Christian's Zach Nave second in 4:31.38.

Other boys winners included Clear Lake's Brandon White in the 110 hurdles, Santa 
Rosa Christian's John Diekmann in the 300 hurdles, Anderson Valley's David Steward 
in the 400 and Fort Bragg's Josh Hartsock in the triple jump.

Top girls competitors from the Empire included Fort Bragg's Emeline Oliphant, third 
in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the 100 hurdles; Cloverdale's Becky Bogner, second 
in the 300 hurdles and fourth in the high jump, and Fort Bragg's Jaimee Windlinx, 
second in the shot.
Kim Boullierce of Upper Lake won the high jump at 5-0 and Santa Rosa Christian's 
Cheri McLean won the vault at 8-6.
