CORRINE RICH: MONTGOMERY, TRACK AND FIELD, JUNIOR

COLUMN: ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

In seventh grade, when the track coach told his students to divide up into runners, jumpers and
throwers, Corrine Rich joined the throwers. It was a smart choice.
Rich tossed the shot put 39-feet, 4-inches at Santa Rosa last week, giving her the 12th best shot
toss all-time in the Empire. Her season's best in the discus, a 120-4 at the Woody Wilson Relays, ranks
20th all-time.
``She has long legs and has increased her speed moving across the ring,'' said Montgomery throwing
coach Bill O'Keefe. ``She's very coachable and very bright.''
At 6-foot-2, Rich has also found a passion for volleyball and not only played for the Vikings, but
plays club volleyball for the Empire Volleyball Club and took part in a tournament in Reno last weekend.
She said she enjoys both sports. ``Throwing the shot is more than just brute strength,'' Rich said.
Getting one's adrenaline going is easier in volleyball, she said. ``Just before I throw, I kind of
break away from everyone and get fired up,'' she said.
Rich, who takes advanced placement classes, has a 5.0 GPA and hopes to pursue either engineering or
pre-med.

Montgomery track coach Josh Dorris calls Corrine Rich an exceptional athlete.
Rich plays club volleyball as well as ranking second all-time at Montgomery in the shot put.
She threw 39-4 last week, an Empire best this season. That mark ranks 12th all-time in the Empire.
Rich hopes to qualify for the state meet.
