Healdsburg senior Sarah Sumpter won the Division IV title and had the top time of any
California runner in the field at the prestigious Stanford Invitational Cross Country
Meet on Saturday in Palo Alto.

Sumpter finished the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 50 seconds to win the Division IV
race by 45 seconds. Her time ranks sixth in Empire history and was the third-best mark
Saturday among 1,117 runners.

Nadya Bishton (17:29) and Nastia Bishton (17:31) of Mountain Ridge in Glendale, Ariz.,
had the top two times.

As a junior, Sumpter finished 11th in Division IV at the state cross-country meet and
finished 10th in the 3,200 meters at the Meet of Champions in the spring.

Casa Grande sophomore Jacque Taylor (18:07), running in the girls' seeded race, had the
fifth-best time Saturday -- and third best among state runners.

Petaluma's Sterling Lockert (15:56), who reached the state track and field meet in the
3,200 meters last year, finished 37th overall among 1,320 boys' runners. Lockert was the
top Empire boys' runner.
