By THE PRESS DEMOCRAT Santa Rosa's Jake Arnold, 24, won his first national title Sunday with a victory at the U.S. Indoor Combined Events Championship in Chapel Hill, N.C. Arnold, 24, won the heptathlon crown with personal-bests in the 60 meters (7.11 seconds), long jump (23 feet, 1¾ inches) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.09). Arnold scored 5,851, the second-best total of his career, to beat runner-up Stephen Moore (5,795), the 2001 champion. Arnold, a two-time NCAA decathlon champion at the University of Arizona, also won the shot put (47-11) and the pole vault (16-0¾). Arnold's expected duel with Paul Terek, a 2004 Olympian and the event's three-time champion, didn't materialize. Terek withdrew after the first day and is scheduled to undergo knee surgery this week. Arnold will compete at Multistars Decathlon in Desenzano, Italy, in May prior to the decathlon at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore., June 29-30.
