Girls' athlete of the week

It was only natural that an athlete like Jenna Lundgren, who considered running a part of
her sporting resume, would get more serious about it after attending Maria Carrillo.

Lundgren played two years of soccer for the Pumas before deciding to run exclusively in
cross country and track at the Rincon Valley school well known for its prowess in running.

Last year she won both the 200 and 400 at league championships and last week, Lundgren
matched her personal best while winning the 400 in 60.85 and also ran a 26.6 to win the
200 (hand-held times) in a meet with Petaluma and Ursuline. On Saturday at Skyline High,
she ran the 800 in 2:20.88, another personal best.

“She’s one of the hardest workers on the team,” said Pumas assistant coach Greg Fogg.
“To get those kind of times this early is impressive.”

Lundgren, a senior, said she’d like to lower her 400 time to 58 seconds and the 200 to the
high 25s. “I was surprised with my 200 time, especially for the first time running it this
year,” she said.

Lundgren has a personal trainer to help with explosiveness and technique. “There are a lot
of little things you can work on,” she said.

Lundgren loves the camaraderie in track and appreciates learning about running from past
Carrillo standouts such as Kristen Sanzari, Leanne Fogg and Jenna Lowder.

She has gone to the state meet twice as part of relay teams. She wouldn’t mind following
Sanzari and Fogg to Cal Poly SLO.
