Empire contingent includes five top seeds

THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

If ever an Empire track and field athlete wants to run, jump or throw a personal best,
this is the weekend to do it at the North Coast Section’s Meet of Champions at UC Berkeley’s
track facility, Edwards Stadium.

Prelims are today starting with field events at 10 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m. Finals
Saturday are 10 a.m. for field events and 1:30 for running events.

Like the state meet, the MOC can make a spectator’s mouth drop. Last year, Salesian’s Jahvid
Best, now a Cal football player, set meet records in the 100 meters (10.36) and the 200 (20.65).
Best’s mark in the 200 eclipsed a 40-year-old mark set by Montgomery’s Mel Gray (20.84).

Empire meet record holders are Dennis DeSoto (Santa Rosa, 1981) in the shot put (63-10½) and
Julia Stamps (Santa Rosa, 1997) in the 1,600 (4:42.79).

This year’s Empire contingent include five top seeds: Petaluma junior Sterling Lockert in the
1,600 (4:16.61), Rancho Cotate junior Matt Egelhoff in the high jump (6-6), Montgomery senior
Corinne Rich in the shot (39-9), Casa Grande sophomore Jacque Taylor in the 1,600 (4:53.78) and
Healdsburg senior Sarah Sumpter in the 3,200 (11:21.13).

The top four finishers qualify for state (Cerritos College in Norwalk, May 30-31).

Cardinal Newman senior Austin Davis is a No. 2 seed in the discus (151-3) and Maria Carrillo
sophomore Lauren Curtin is a No. 2 seed in the 1,600 (4:55.11).

Lockert is also a No. 3 seed in the 3,200 (9:36.10) and Taylor is a No. 3 seed in the 3,200
(11:24.74).

Rich, also the No. 3 seed in the discus, said she won’t compete at state because it falls on
the same day as her high school graduation.

The girls discus and five other field events will be finals on Friday.
