Empire throwers are the best

Cardinal Newman's Austin Davis and Montgomery's Corinne Rich won throwing
titles and eight other Empire athletes also qualified for the state meet by
virtue of their performances at the North Coast Section Meet of Champions
on Saturday at Cal-Berkeley.

Davis, a senior, won the discus with a throw of 158 feet, 3 inches. Rich, a
senior who qualified for state in the discus Friday, won the shot put title
with a toss of 40-4½. Rich does not plan to compete at state due to a
conflict with her high school graduation.

Other state qualifiers from the Empire were: Casa Grande sophomore Jacque
Taylor (1,600 meters, 3,200); Maria Carrillo sophomore Lauren Curtin
(1,600); Petaluma junior Sterling Lockert (1,600); Cardinal Newman senior
Joe Withers (800); Rancho Cotate junior Matt Egelhoff (high jump); Windsor
sophomore Mike Tracy (high jump) and El Molino senior Joe Durling and
Sonoma senior Patrick Sammons (discus).

The top four in each event Saturday earned a trip to state, which will
begin Friday with prelims in Cerritos.

Taylor will be making her second trip to state. She finished fourth at
state in the 3,200 meters last year. She will return thanks to a
second-place finish in the 3,200 (11.01.73) and a third-place mark in the
1,600 (4:58.66).

Curtin finished second in the 1,600 in 4:57.76 to earn her first trip to
state.

The Empire will send two boys' high jumpers to state thanks to the efforts
of Egelhoff and Tracy, both first-time qualifiers.
Egelhoff placed third with a leap of 6-4 and Tracy placed fourth at 6-4.
Tracy has a school-record jump of 6-7 this year and Egelhoff has leapt 6-6,
the third-best mark in school history.

Lockert will return to state, but in a different event. He finished 18th at
state in the 3,200 last year. He qualified in the 1,600 Saturday with a
fourth-place finish of 4:16.07. That was a personal best and an Empire best.

Withers will make his state debut after a fourth-place finish of 1:57.52 in
the 800. Withers has an Empire-best time of 1:56.20 this year, more than
three seconds better than his top time as a junior.

Led by Davis, three Empire athletes finished in the top four in the discus.
Durling (158-1) and Sammons (151-3), both first-time state qualifiers,
finished second and fourth, respectively.

A total of 12 Empire athletes qualified for state.
Maria Carrillo sophomore Julia Krickl qualified in the high jump Friday and
Santa Rosa junior Troy Baker qualified in the shot put.
