Since two of the best track athletes in the state will be competing across town from each other in Santa Rosa on
Saturday you’ll have to be pretty fast yourself to see both.
The North Coast Section 1A Championships may only be for small schools but the fastest girl in California will be
there. This meet, at Montgomery HS, begins at 11:00am for the field events and 1:00pm for running. It features St.
Elizabeth junior Ashton Purvis who has the fastest times recorded in 2009 at 11.56 seconds for the 100 and 23.76
for the 200. With her races scheduled for 2:35 and 3:45 you’ll need your own track spikes to see those while
rushing between them over to Santa Rosa High School to catch the boys 3200.
At SRHS the North Coast Section Redwood Empire Championship meet is taking place for the large schools. Field
events there kick off at 9:00am with running at 10:00am. In the 3200 Novato junior Erik Olson will be running at
3:05pm and has the state best at 8:55.19. Three local standouts will be challenging him; Santa Rosa’s Reesey
Byers and Rory McLeod, along with Petaluma’s Sterling Lockert.
Locals should be well represented in the winner’s circle, and Healdsburg’s Dante Fountain actually has the top
seed in three events; the 100, 200 and the long jump, which he just picked up a couple of weeks ago.
Possible multiple winners at the 1A include Fort Bragg’s Oleg Ryabokorovka (LJ, TJ) and Willits Ceara Snyder
(SP, DT). Santa Rosa’ s Troy Baker has the best shot put mark in all of the North Coast Section as does Analy’s
Mike Tracy in the high jump. With Olson only running the 3200 from here out, Lockert becomes the top 1600 runner
in the NCS. On the girls side Casa Grande’s Jacque Taylor could have multiple wins as she is seeded number one in
the 1600 and could very well win more events. Admission price is $8 general admission and $5 for students and
senior citizens. It will not only be the winners advancing as the top seven from the Redwood Empire meet move on
and the top three from the 1A. Those will all advance to the state qualifying Meet of Champions the following
Saturday at Edwards Stadium at the University of California in Berkeley. The State meet will be June 5th and 6th
in Clovis, California.
