Michelle Stone's tough decision Posted: June 4, 2009 9:34:19 PM Posted by: Staff Writer Eric Branch About three weeks ago, Ursuline pole vaulter Michelle Stone had a decision to make. She had to register to take the SAT, but she had to take the test the first weekend in June, which also happened to be when the CIF Track and Field Championships were being held in Clovis. So what to do? If she reached the state meet, she could take the SAT on Saturday morning in Fresno, situated next to Clovis. But if she registered to take the SAT in Fresno and failed to qualify for the state meet, well, then she'd have to drive four hours to take the test. In Fresno. Talk about a cruel joke. Anyway, Stone decided to take the SAT in Fresno, a decision that added even more pressure to her postseason. As it turns out, Stone didn't buckle under the extra strain. She qualified for state by clearing 11 feet, 3 inches last week, the fourth-best vault in Empire history. She'll compete in the prelims Friday and take the SAT Saturday morning.
