Former Empire star Stamps Mallon finishes second in SF marathon Published: Sunday, July 26, 2009 Julia Stamps Mallon, 30, a former star at Santa Rosa High and All-American at Stanford, finished second at the San Francisco Marathon on Sunday in a time of 2 hours, 59 minutes and 32 seconds. Mallon, a veteran of 13 marathons since 2002 and the winner of the 2006 San Francisco Marathon, finished behind Japan’s Yoko Shibui, a 2008 Olympian in the 10,000 meters. Shibui, 30, whose personal-best of 2:19.41 ranks seventh on the all-time women’s marathon list, used the event as a tune-up for the World Championships in Berlin next month. She finished in 2:46.34. Mallon said she battled strained hamstrings Sunday, which she suffered en route to winning the Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon last week. Mallon’s personal-best time is 2:46.18 and she won San Francisco in ’06 in 2:54.55. “From my hips up, I felt great,” Mallon said. “But from my hips down, I didn’t want to go as fast.” Mallon, who lives in Miami, has tentative plans to run the London Marathon in April. Andrew Cook, 28, of Flower Mound, Texas, a qualifier in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, won the men’s title Sunday in 2:26.32.
