Petaluma senior Sterling Lockert, one of the Empire’s top middle distance runners, reached deep into the running
annals with his performance in the rarely run 3,000 meters Friday afternoon at the Stanford Invitational.

Lockert ran an 8:30.58, breaking the Empire boys’ record in that event, surpassing the 8:32.7 of Petaluma’s Jon Sisler
set in 1974. Sisler’s time was converted from two miles. Sisler also ran an 8:36.0 3,000 meters in 1974.

Cardinal Newman’s JK Withers, now competing for the University of Oregon, ran an 8:36.17 3,000 meters in 2004.

Lockert finished fourth in the 3,000 meter races held at Stanford. The best time was 8:28.54.

The Casa Grande girls won the distance medley at Stanford, with Jacque Taylor running the anchor. The Casa girls
finished with the day’s best time of 12:16.71. Only the 1997 Santa Rosa girls (11:52.1), featuring Julia Stamps and
Trina Cox, and the 2007 Maria Carrillo girls (12:15.82) have run a faster distance medley relay in the Empire.

Four runners run the distance medley, which includes legs of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters.

Healdsburg’s Eric Arneson finished eighth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.06, Santa Rosa’s Chris McCloskey
was 15th in 58.13 and Alex Taylor of Healdsburg was 19th in 58.83. All three had times that rank in the top 10 of
Empire times and Arneson’s was fourth best, also in a race that is rarely run among high schoolers.

The Stanford Invitational continues today with more high school and college events.
