Montgomery opened its league cross country season with a pair of wins in Ukiah Wednesday.
A possible tight race for first in the boys never materalized as the Viking senior Aria Kiani
eased over the course, running back with teammates, rather than challenging Wildcat star senior
Andrew Zellman. Zellman (17:18) ran alone up front from the start, winning by over a minute and
a half over Kiani (18:51). Many of the Vikings appeared to be holding back a bit perhaps because
they have a big Invitational this weekend in Clovis. Montgomery still won easily 22-34. "I wanted
to be first or second today." said Zellman, "so I was happy with the race." Zellman himself is
looking forward to attempting a top 10 finish at an Invitational in Monterey soon.

The Viking girls scored a perfect 15 to Ukiah's 48 over the Wildcat's 5,000 meter course. A trio of
Vikings, Hunter Connell, Julie Nacouzi and Sarah Gallagher, broke away early to open up a big gap
over the field. After the second time up the hill, Nacouzi and Gallagher pulled away from Connell.
The two then coasted to the finish with Gallagher, who will miss Clovis for SAT testing, being awarded
the offical winner's spot, as both were given a time of 22:36. "Last year our team missed making it
to State by 2 points." said Gallagher. "As long as we keep training hard, I think we will make it
this year."
