By the time the race started, at 7 a.m., 563 people took off. About 100 of those were running the full 26.2 mile route. The runners left Juilliard Park in downtown Santa Rosa for the nearby Prince Memorial Greenway path as it follows Santa Rosa Creek. The full route was two loops around, going west as far as the creek near Willowside Middle School on Hall Road. The fastest marathon time was posted by Jeff Gardina of Santa Clara with a race of 2:30:05. But not far behind him was Windsor school teacher Bob Shebest, who ran the 26.1 miles in 2:42:17. He also won the race for his age group, men 35-39 years. "It was flat. It was fast. The weather was really cooperating," said Shebest, a Santa Rosa resident. "It was fun." Marathon director Art Webb of Santa Rosa, himself a veteran distance runner who specializes in 50- and 100-mile runs, has covered more than 120,000 miles in 30 years. He was happy with the day and the nice layer of fog that came with it. "We special ordered that after yesterday," Webb said, referencing the triple digit heat in areas on Saturday.
