Athlete of the Year
Luis Luna
11, PinerAs Piner track coach Luis Rosales watched his star distance runner stick a record-breaking time in the 3,200 meters at the state meet in Fresno, he thought of how close it came to never happening. Luna was so sick for the NBL league meet that Rosales wasn’t sure if he’d make it to school that day. Luna bowed out of his second-best event, the 1,600 — he had the best time in the Empire in that one, too — but managed to qualify in the 3,200. No one was surprised when Luna later qualified for state, but his performance there was startling; he crossed in 8:55.43, easily best in Redwood Empire history. Luna finished sixth, but would have been state champion almost anywhere outside of California. Rosales couldn’t have been prouder. “The biggest assets he brings to the team are one, leadership, and two, just being a good person. If a guy breaks nine minutes, Luis is the first to congratulate him.” — Phil Barber, The Press Democrat FIRST TEAM Paul Carol, Maria Carrillo, junior Caleb Cunha, Fort Bragg, senior Nick DeSoto, Rancho Cotate, junior Titui Gomes, St. Helena, junior Andrew Kozel, Healdsburg, sophomore Adam Lundquist, Casa Grande, junior Quentin Mendoza, Montgomery, senior Gary Randolph, Healdsburg, senior Trevor Samandra, Montgomery, senior Jemal Williams, Sonoma Academy, senior SECOND TEAM Brian Bradley, Clear Lake, senior Randall Brown, Cardinal Newman, senior Aaron Dhuyvetter, Ukiah, senior David Forman, Rancho Cotate, sophomore Dantae Garcia, Maria Carrillo, sophomore Dante Hay, Maria Carrillo, freshman Greg Maggioncalda, Sonoma Valley, sophomore Mariano Malvino, Montgomery, senior Aidan O’Donnell, Analy, senior Brycen Poarch, Casa Grande, sophomore COACH OF THE YEAR Jenean Bingham, Healdsburg
