Flores breaks Empire PV record

On Saturday, April 13, 2002, The Santa Rosa Express TC hosted a Youth Track and Field, sanctioned by the Pacific Association/United States of America Track & Field (USATF), at SRJC. Competitors (about 600) were from all over Northern California. Most of them were middle school age and lower. There were some high school age athletes, all of whom competed 'unattached'.
All of the local high school age athletes were pole vaulters. Emely Flores won the 'Open Girls' age group clearing 11' 4". She started at 10' 6" clearing it on her 2nd attempt. She then cleared 11' 0" on her 3rd vault and 11' 4" , also on her 3rd vault. Matt Tillinghast won the 'Open Boys' age group clearing 14' 0". His only miss through that height was on his first vault at the winning height. In second place was Ryan Williams. He also cleared 14' 0" with only one miss at the winning height but also had misses at lower heights. Mike Tillinghast was third also clearing 14' 0" but he had two misses at the winning height.
Flores who is competing this year for Santa Rosa high school surpassed the old empire record of 11-3, set last year, by Petaluma's Ashley Lennon and the Panther school record of 11-2 1/2 by Shail Pec-Crouse in 1998.
