Stamps Mallon makes triumphant return
Former Santa Rosa High standout finishes first among women in 1:22:01
Published: Sunday, July 19, 2009

Former Santa Rosa High standout Julia Stamps Mallon placed first Sunday in a time of 1:22:01, winning her first Napa-to-
Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon.

Eli Rodriguez of Whittier continued his winning streak, finishing first in a time of 1:09.25.

Favorite Tesfaya Dirba of Ethiopia had a clear lead until Mile 8 when his calf muscle flared, allowing Rodriguez to take
over the charge. Ed Baker of Palo Alto finished second with a time of 1:10:20.2, while Dirba struggled to finish third
at 1:12:40.

Stamps Mallon also battled a pulled leg muscle but was able to hold off Lisbeth Sunshine, 45, of San Francisco, who
finished second overall in the women’s division with a time of 1:22:22.1.

The current top-ranked female runner in the U.S. in the 50-54 age group, Christine Kennedy of Los Altos, finished third
in 1:24:39.

The scenic half-marathon started at Cuvaison Carneros Estate Winery outside of Napa, and finished in historic Sonoma Plaza.
