PALO ALTO-The Maria Carrillo girls four by 800 relay team set a school record and won the event at Saturday's prestigious Stanford Invitational.The team of Amy Robinson, Kristin Fladseth, Julianne Baker and Ashlee Drady ran 9:39.50, nearly ten seconds better than the school record set two years ago at Stanford.
Robinson, who ran a personal best 10:31.00 in the open 3000 Friday night, opened in 2:24, and Fladseth followed,
obtained a large lead.
"After that it was a matter of hearing people cheering to know how far back (the other runners) were," said Baker, who ran third.
Drady survived a challenge from Yfa Kretzchmar of University, who opened her two-lap leg with a 61 second 400.
Kretzchmar moved her team from fifth to second, but Drady outkicked her. The Carrillo team came into the event seeded seventh.
"I heard (the announcer) go: 'Does Maria Carrillo have anything left?'" Drady said of her run down the final stretch.
"I was just thinking, yes I do."
Drady took one second off her personal best in her anchor lap, running 2:21.
The same team placed sixth (12:41.10) for Carrillo in the distance medley relay Friday night.
